Why sort new apartments by commute?
A job move is one of the most common reasons renters look at new apartments in Austin, and the Austin metro spreads its big employers across all directions. If your job is at Samsung in Taylor, Tesla Giga Texas in Del Valle, Apple on Parmer Lane, Dell in Round Rock, or the Domain, the right building for you depends on the drive first and the special second.
We sort the board by free-flow drive minutes to each employer anchor, then add the route and the toll so the commute shows up in the monthly number.
Which employer anchors do we track?
| Anchor | Area | Main routes |
|---|---|---|
| Samsung Semiconductor Taylor | Williamson County, east | SH-130, US-79 |
| Tesla Giga Texas | Del Valle, southeast | SH-130, SH-71 |
| Apple Americas Operations Center | Parmer Lane, north | Parmer Lane, MoPac Expressway, SH-45 |
| Dell Technologies Round Rock | Round Rock | I-35, SH-45 |
| The Domain | North Austin | MoPac Expressway, Burnet Road |
| Applied Materials and NXP Semiconductors | North and northwest | MoPac, 183A Toll Road |
| SpaceX Bastrop | Bastrop County | SH-71 |
| Dell Seton Medical Center and UT Austin | Central | I-35, MoPac |
| Austin-Bergstrom International Airport | Southeast | SH-71, US-183 |
Our Samsung Taylor and Tesla commute guide covers the two largest east-side employers and SH-130 in detail.
How do tolls change the monthly number?
Austin’s toll network includes the 183A Toll Road, SH-130, SH-45, and the MoPac express lanes, mostly run by the Central Texas Regional Mobility Authority and TxDOT. A TxTag is the cheapest way to pay. To estimate a monthly toll bill:
Monthly tolls = toll per one-way trip × trips per week × 52 ÷ 12
At $4 a trip and 10 one-way trips a week, that’s about $173 a month, or about $2,080 a year. A building $150 cheaper on rent but $173 more in tolls costs you more each month. Toll rates change and differ by tag and time, so enter your current posted rate. The toll roads guide lists the corridors.
How do we measure drive time?
We use free-flow minutes because they’re consistent and comparable across buildings. Free-flow is not your 8 AM commute time, so we add an estimate for your start time and flag routes affected by construction. I-35 downtown work runs from 2027 to 2033, which can change the fastest route through the middle of the metro for the length of your lease.
What about hospital shifts?
If you work a hospital shift, drive time at shift change matters more than at 8 AM. We estimate both, check parking at home and at the hospital, and ask for garage spots near the elevator or ground-floor units when you arrive late. The hospital shift guide covers this need.
When does an employer page publish?
We only publish a page for a single employer where 5 or more new buildings sit within 20 free-flow minutes. That rule keeps every employer page useful. Until then, this page and the guides below cover the commute, and the areas table shows which parts of the metro hold the most new buildings.
